Tourism

Tlc run several courses throughout the year for Tourism and its service industries, including courses for hotels and hotel management, receptionists, secretaries and waiters, tour operators and agencies etc.

We also run courses that directly compliment professional studies in Tourism - "back up courses in English" specific to the tourist trade.

Beach at GC

These courses provide excellent preparation for any of the major European examinations in English for Tourism including the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry English for the Tourist Industry Exams.

All courses are topic based and specific to the tourist trade, and contain realistic workshop modules and simulations. The workshops are designed to test your ability to use the English you have learned in "real life" scenarios, and challenge individual course participants to deal with authentic situations in international tourism.

Tlc methodology prevails at all times and emphasis is on the "spoken word" for example:

  • making presentations and reports
  • negotiating contracts and agreements
  • Taking part in job interviews
  • discussing key issues
  • giving advice and information
  • dealing with customer problems and complaints, etc. etc.
Listening Skills Listening to authentic material, again relevant to tourism, is another important aspect of the course. If we do not understand what is being said, we cannot respond effectively. Listening materials include a variety of accents to help you become accustomed to the spoken word.
Reading Skills To improve reading skills we use a wide variety of authentic materials (all from tourist publications) and to check your understanding we have designed several practical exercises (oral and written).

All written work on Tlc courses is completely relevant to the workplace and includes writing letters, CVs, faxes, press releases, brochures, reports, presentations etc.

A typical Tlc Base Course syllabus might include:

  • Choosing a career in Tourism
  • Looking at Travel Agencies (modules 1 - 4)
  • Tour operators (modules 1 - 4)
  • Tourism organizations
  • Hotels and Hoteliers
  • Tourist boards and Tourist Information Centres
  • Ecological, Environmental and Economic issues
  • Customer relations
  • Trade fairs and Conferences
  • Tour and resort representatives - guided tours
  • Working with the airlines

All themes are interactive and are designed to be studied in group and pair work situations. A wide variety of course books and materials are used to ensure that we provide the best of everything needed to pass your exams. As always, groups are small and courses are run at all levels.

We also offer our Tourism students the opportunity to gain important professional experience and practical skills in Travel agencies etc. on the island and, for those who are more concerned about "the spoken word", we offer the opportunity to work in England for 4 - 12 weeks.

All courses follow the Tlc methodology.

A free needs analysis is conducted before course start.
